Not so!

True, Hansen Natural reported Wednesday a lower-than-expected first-quarter profit due to lower profit margins, but the results weren't that bad. For the quarter, the company's net sales rose to $212.2 million and it earned $28.8 million, or 29 cents a share. Analysts, however, expected 35 cents on revenue of $221, according to Thomson Reuters. The thing is, that compared to last year, profit climbed 43% and revenue jumped 28%. It seems that the Monster Energy brand drinks had a lot do with Hansen's revenue growth, especially the new Java Monster dairy-based coffee drink.

The problem? Already in the fourth quarter investors were concerned about decreasing margins, and this quarter as well Hansen said its profit was hurt by higher costs, including a 34% boost in costs of sales and a 15% rise in operating expenses. Talk about margin squeeze.

And of course, it didn't help that Goldman Sachs downgraded the stock to Neutral from Buy on the results, and cut profit estimates for 2008, 2009 and 2010. Even the Monster sales growth didn't satisfy the broker and the analyst expects the weak profit margins to continue throughout the year.

So now what? It seems that a lot of the bad news has already been priced in, but the question is whether Hansen can work a good enough strategy to encounter the current climate of rising costs while still managing good top line growth. No doubt, the company has the advantage of being able to capitalize easier than Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO), PepsiCo (NYSE: PEP) and Dr. Pepper Snapple (NYSE: DPS) on the shift in consumers' drinking habits to more healthy products. But rivals are catching up, and fast. With the stock setting a new 52-week low today, I'd jump on it if I thought Hansen could pull it off, but I do have my concerns about that ability. By the way, Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ: JSDA), which actually swung to a loss and saw its shares plunge too, has recovered somewhat the past few days.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Wells Fargo looking to pull off a JP Morgan-like deal

Filed under: Deals, JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Jones Soda (JSDA), Wells Fargo (WFC), Bear Stearns Cos (BSC), Federal Reserve
In an article in the San Fransisco Business Times, Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC) CEO John Stumpf spoke about how he wouldn't at all mind getting involved in a Federal Reserve brokered deal, like JP Morgan Chase (NYSE: JPM) did with Bear Stearns (NYSE: BSC).

According to the article: "I would not be averse to a Fed-assisted transaction," Stumpf said, adding that any deal would have to meet the company's traditional acquisition targets and benefit the bank's acquired customers. Wells has built a reputation as a disciplined buyer over the years, focusing on deals that generate at least a 15% internal rate of return and contribute to the bottom line within three years.

"Fixer-uppers don't bother us," he added.

Who wouldn't want to be part of a deal like this? It's become pretty obvious that JP Morgan Chase got an amazing deal to buy Bear Stearns, and now Wells Fargo wants to join the party.

If Wells Fargo is able to swing a great deal by buying some large and beleaguered financial company for less than that company's building is worth, like what happened with Bear Stearns, then investors may want to take a long hard look at Wells Fargo stock. This may be the potential catalyst needed to drive the stock up in the coming months.

In the press release, Jones Soda said,
Jones Soda Co. today announced that Peter van Stolk will step down from his position as chairman of the board of directors and as chief executive officer at the end of the year. He will remain on as a member of the board of directors. Board members Scott Bedbury and Steve Jones will take on the interim positions of chairman and CEO respectively while the company conducts a search for a new CEO.
The move comes after a tough year for Jones Soda complete with a huge decline in share price and outrage and a short-lived SEC investigation of insider trading by members of the company's board of directors. Before investors get too excited about van Stolk's departure, they should read what the company said about him in its 10-K filed on March 14th:

We are dependent upon the creative skills and leadership of our founder, Peter M. van Stolk, who serves as President and Chief Executive Officer. We have in place with Mr. van Stolk a two-year employment agreement that expires on November 30, 2007. The loss of Mr. van Stolk's services could have a material adverse affect on our business and operations, including our ability to develop and execute on a long-term, profitable business plan. In addition, our management team consists of several key production, distribution, sales and financial personnel who have been recruited within the past several years. The loss of any of these key personnel could delay or negatively impact our operations, profitability and employee morale.
Interestingly, the PR announcing his departure was absent of any mention of "our founder" -- Jones Soda doesn't want investors thinking about this: the company is losing the services (I know, he's staying on the board, but still...) of the visionary who built the company. Here's what the company says about Van Stolk on its own website:

Marketing maverick Peter van Stolk has a unique, interactive approach to grounding his products, an intense connection to his consumers and an uncanny ability to predict trends. He entered the highly competitive beverage industry, learned the rules and then promptly rejected them. Peter has been able to attract attention by setting his products apart from the rest and developing an emotional bond with his customers....

Maybe Jones Soda won't be able to grow successful with van Stolk at the top -- But I think it's a huge mistake to think that the company will be able to move on to bigger and better things absent the man responsible for the company's success.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones Soda (JSDA) CEO to resign

Filed under: Major movement, Good news, Management, Jones Soda (JSDA), Options, Technical Analysis
Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ: JSDA) shares are trading higher today after the company announced that its founder, Chairman and CEO Peter Van Stolk will step down from his positions by the end of the year. He will remain with the company as a board member. Board member Scott Bedbury will serve as interim chairman, while board member Steve Jones will serve as interim CEO during the company's search for a replacement. If you think that the company won't fall by too much in the coming months, then now could be a good time to look at a bullish hedged trade on JSDA.

After hitting a one-year high of $32.60 in April, the stock notched its one-year low of $5.86 yesterday. JSDA opened this morning at $6.08. So far today the stock has hit a low of $6.00 and a high of $6.19. As of 10:25, JSDA is trading at 6.16, up 0.22 (3.7%). The chart for JSDA looks are bearish and steady.

For a bullish hedged play on this stock, I would consider a March bull-put credit spread below the $5 range. A bull-put credit spread is an options position that combines the purchase and sale of put options to hedge risk in case the stock doesn't do what you think but still leverage nice returns. For this particular trade, we will make an 11.1% return in just 3 and a half months as long as JSDA is above $5 at March expiration. Jones would have to fall by more than 18% before we would start to lose money.

JSDA hasn't been below $5 at all in the past year and has shown support around $5.95 recently. This trade could be risky if the excitement for investors has fully left this stock, but even if that happens, there could be a grace period for the new CEO who will start at the beginning of 2008.

Brent Archer is an options analyst and writer at Investors Observer. Many observers, including our own Sarah Gilbert, had been wondering if the stock had overheated and was trading based on irrational expectations rather than valuation.

Writing about the Jones Soda insiders, I wonder about what directors are supposed to do when they think they hold overvalued stock: "Does she have some moral obligation to hold the stock, or should she try to dump it before it plummets as investor exuberance subsides?"

In any case, the SEC has terminated its informal investigation of the trades, and the directors will get to keep their well-timed trading gains -- that was more than 50% higher than its current price.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones Soda (JSDA) offers NFL fans the taste of victory, field turf

Filed under: Press releases, Products and services, Management, Consumer experience, Marketing and advertising, Jones Soda (JSDA)
Have you ever watched your favorite NFL team and thought to yourself, "I wonder what their locker room tastes like?" The creative team at Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ: JSDA) is thinking Seattle Seahawks fans have, and has designed a few new sodas that will offer its drinkers just such a taste experience as Perspiration and Dirt.

Seattle-based Jones Soda began taking online pre-orders yesterday for its new soda flavors that it thinks accurately reflects the hard work of professional football players. I don't know about you ... but I have personally never watched football and found myself wondering what the players' sweat would smell like, much less taste like. But if by some chance you have found yourself obsessed with not knowing the taste of such things, you are in luck!

Welcome to the world of Perspiration soda. According to company spokeswoman Clare Bowles, the new Perspiration brand soda is "kind of salty tasting," and perhaps even more tempting to your taste buds, it has a "stinky football sock" finish. Wow ... my prayers have been answered!!! I never would have dreamed that my desire for a drink with a stinky football sock aftertaste would be fulfilled.

OK, so maybe Perspiration isn't the taste you are after. Maybe you're looking for something a little easier to the palette. You can choose one of the other new flavors that the company is offering up like, say ... Dirt, Sports Cream or Natural Field Turf. Hmm, not sure which one appeals to me more, the dirt or the sports cream. Decisions, decisions.

I think personally I would choose to try out the last of the new flavors ... Sweet Victory. This flavor is supposed to possess a berry flavor, which is more appealing to me than the effect one would get when being "tackled really hard, you're down on the ground and you get a little bit of the grass in your teeth." That's, apparently, is the Natural Turf taste.

What do you think? Would you buy a soda called Dirt? What about Perspiration? I wonder if Jones Soda is going to try to compliment its Sweet Victory flavor with a new one called Bitter Defeat. Would make sense I suppose.

All you Seattle Seahawks fans out there can head over to the company's website and order your 5-pack of the tasty flavors now.

Michael Fowlkes has worked as a stock trader for seven years and spent the last two years working as an analyst for the online investment advisory service Investor's Observer

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones Soda (JSDA) insiders time stock sales well -- too well?

Filed under: Management, Law, Marketing and advertising, Scandals, Jones Soda (JSDA)

If the members of the board of directors at Jones Soda (NASDAQ: JSDA) weren't trading based on any kind of inside information, they may want to consider starting their own hedge funds. That's how good the timing of their sales was.

During an 85-day period this spring, 5 directors sold nearly all of their shares in the company. The stock is about 67% off the high it reached during that period. According to the Seattle-Post Intelligencer, "If the board members and executives had made the trades Monday, when the stock closed at $10.74 on the Nasdaq stock market, they would have gotten a combined $3.6 million, or 45 percent less than what they received."

CEO Peter van Stolk told the newspaper that the directors exercise options/sell stock as compensation for all their hard work. But the sales, and their uncanny timing, raise a question: If the outside directors were so involved in the management of the company, wouldn't they have been aware of the problems the company was having that led to the demise of the share-price?

Industry experts are questioning the timing of the sales, but maybe we should give them the benefit of the doubt: Even after the sell-off, the stock is trading at 114 times earnings. The stock had been on a tear, and you can hardly blame them for wanting to take some profits... or all their profits.

Regardless of whether the Jones directors were trading inappropriately -- I won't speculate -- this raises an interesting question: What is an executive or director supposed to do when he feels that his company's stock is overvalued? Does she have some moral obligation to hold the stock, or should she try to dump it before it plummets as investor exuberance subsides?

Ultimately, investors should be more worried about the performance of a company than director sales. And given the stock's recent chart, there's plenty of complaining to be done on that front.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Coke, Pepsi thirst for profits from bottled water

Filed under: Products and services, Industry, Consumer experience, Competitive strategy, Coca-Cola (KO), PepsiCo (PEP), Marketing and advertising, Hansen Natural (HANS), Clear Channel Commun (CCU), Jones Soda (JSDA)

Coca-Cola Co. (NYSE: KO) and PepsiCo Inc. (NYSE: PEP), which are betting that people's thirst for bottled water will continue to grow, would probably prefer that the public ignore an experiment that Penn and Teller did on their Showtime series a few years ago.

Using hidden cameras, the magicians videotaped unsuspecting people at a restaurant who were being served glasses of what they thought were expensive bottled water by a steward. What they didn't know was that their beverage came from a hose. The program is called "Penn and Teller [explicative deleted]," which is exactly how I feel about the bottled water business.

The hype around popular brands, including Vitaminwater, whose corporate parent Glaceau Coke recently agreed to buy for $4.2 billion, fizzes upon closer inspection.

While there are people with bad water and unsafe water, most Americans have perfectly fine water coming out of their taps. In fact, as FastCompany points out, the two leading brands, Pepsi's Aquafina and Coke's Dasani, are purified municipal water. The Natural Resources Defense Council and other experts have repeatedly pointed out that bottled water isn't as strictly regulated as tap water. An NRDC study actually found that 33% of the waters it tested "violated an enforceable state standard or exceeded microbiological-purity guidelines, or both, in at least one sample."

"There are very few differences between the health benefits of bottled and tap water except in isolated circumstances," said Greg Kail, a spokesman for the American Water Works Association, a trade group representing operators of water systems, in an interview. "In North America, we all enjoy some of the safest drinking water in the world."

None of this matters to most bottled water consumers, who are convinced that the H2O in the small plastic jugs that they buy in their supermarket and convenience stores is better for them. It certainly is convenient, which is why I buy some of the stuff myself. There is plenty of room for the industry to grow.

Kim Jeffrey, the CEO of Nestle SA (OTC: NSRGY)'s water business in North America, who oversees US sales of Perrier, San Pellegrino and Poland Spring worth about $4.5 billion this year, told FastCompany that the bottled water business is only about half of the size of the carbonated beverage industry -- but with only 15% of its marketing budget.

That's remarkable considering how much water sales are rising while soda sales are falling. An exception to the rule has been Hansen Natural Corp. (NASDAQ: HANS), whose stock has jumped more than 36% this year. Hansen recently signed a distribution deal with Anheuser-Busch Cos. (NYSE: BUD), which like the soda makers is struggling to revive flagging sales. The stock of another trendy soda company, Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ: JSDA), has soared more than 41% this year even though it was dropped by Starbucks Corp. (NASDAQ: SBUX).

So look for more over-priced, over-hyped beverages to come to your grocer's cooler soon and for big companies to continue to snap up the companies that make them.

The pops/sodas/cold drinks (depending on your region) will be pulled by the end of June.

A SBUX spokesperson noted that "[Jones] has been a very good partner, but we decided to move in a different direction." In a less vague statement, the company said it intends to use the extra refrigerated space -- now made vacant by the elimination of Jones products -- to chill additional cold-food offerings for Starbucks patrons.

Jones Chief Executive Peter van Stolk noted that "We are working with [Starbucks] . . . and we will support them in many ways." He also noted that the two companies, both headquartered in Seattle, have a "relationship that we will work on building," asserting that "We are good partners."

As for the bottom line, van Stolk opined that its exclusion from the Starbucks chain will not severely impact revenue, and a Stifel Nicolaus analyst said that sales in SBUX stores probably represented less than 3% of total Jones sales. An analyst with ThinkEquity Partners, however, was quick to say today's news "is certainly not favorable . . . now we have a shrinking situation [for Jones Soda]."

In early trading, JSDA shares have dropped 5.7% after a loss of nearly 4% in Wednesday's session.

So much for keeping up with the Jones.

Beth Gaston Moon is an analyst at Schaeffer's Investment Research.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Jones Soda loses its fizz

Filed under: Earnings reports, Deals, Bad news, Press releases, Consumer experience, Competitive strategy, Wal-Mart (WMT), Coca-Cola (KO), Jones Soda (JSDA)

Jones Soda Company (NASDAQ: JSDA) has lost whatever fizz it might have had as an investment and is in the process of losing its identity as a brand. Yes, it was a big deal when quirky Jones Soda beat out Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to be the soft drink of choice for the Seattle Seahawks at their stadium. But such a venue may be the wrong place to sell a soda that made a name for itself precisely because it marketed unfamiliar flavors in unfamiliar (and somewhat undesirable) locations such as tattoo and piercing parlors, grunge cafes and slacker parks. And yes, it was nice that customers could send in a picture of their mutt as a possible bottle label. But if it wishes to play in the big leagues, Jones will have to come up with some version of a Coke-like flavor to serve to stadium customers who, just because they must buy the product at the game, may not be willing to shell out premium soda prices for Jones' products at the grocery store. And just exactly what is Jones Soda doing for sale at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT)? Is Jones Soda now going to market itself as a value-priced soda, except with weird flavors?

Jones Soda cannot seem to settle on a business model, cannot figure out what it wants to be when it grows up. I suggest it might be time to think about becoming a profitable company. The number of cases of soda sold in 1Q 2007 doubled to 1.72 million. But revenue increased by 5% while EPS was ZERO, the same as it was in 1Q 2006. Sell more product, make less money. Counter-intuitive marketing campaigns can be very effective, but at some point Jones Soda must show some ROI to justify its current P/E multiple of 101.09, 400% above the industry average.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Before the bell 5-24-07: AAPL, VZ, C, DELL, MCD ...

Filed under: Before the bell, Google (GOOG), Apple Inc (AAPL), Dell (DELL), eBay (EBAY), Time Warner (TWX), Coca-Cola (KO), McDonald's (MCD), Citigroup Inc.
